IRA Financial review: crypto IRA and solo 401(k) fees
With IRA Financial, a crypto account costs $100 per year, and you also pay 1% whenever you buy or sell coins. IRA Financial has no minimum amount to open or fund an account, so these 2 charges are the costs to plan around, per IRA Financial's fee page. If you are moving 401(k) money, call before you sign anything. A retirement specialist will walk you through the choices in front of you, and the next step is yours to make.

What does IRA Financial charge in dollars?
IRA Financial charges $100 a year, plus 1% of each crypto purchase or sale. The trading fee applies when you buy or sell coins, not simply when you move money into the account.
Here's what that adds up to at three balances (the $100 yearly charge is the same at every level):
| Amount you move | Cost to buy in | Annual fee from then on |
|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | $100 | $100 |
| $50,000 | $500 | $100 |
| $250,000 | $2,500 | $100 |
That $100 annual charge doesn't change no matter how large your balance grows. When you sell down the road, that trade also costs 1% of the amount sold.
Coins available and how they're stored
You can pick from more than 20 coins, including Bitcoin, Cardano, Chainlink and Bonk. Bitstamp handles the trading and also stores the coins, with most held in offline storage.
Account types that can hold crypto at IRA Financial
You can open Roth and traditional IRAs, HSAs, and solo 401(k)s with IRA Financial. You can invest in crypto through the IRAs and solo 401(k)s.
For new money going into an IRA, the 2026 cap comes to $7,500. A rollover from a 401(k) doesn't count toward that cap, because you're moving savings you already have, not adding new money.
Rolling a 401(k) into a crypto IRA
IRA Financial takes 401(k) rollovers. Funds in a former employer's plan can roll over whenever you like. A plan with your current employer permits this only through an in-service rollover, which is moving money while you're still employed there, and only when your plan allows it.
How the money gets there matters enormously:
- Direct rollover: the old plan sends your money straight to the new IRA, so nothing gets withheld and no tax applies.
- Indirect rollover: the plan sends the money to you and keeps 20% for federal tax. From there, you have 60 days to deposit the entire amount into an IRA, and that includes the withheld 20%.
Say you cash out $20,000: the plan keeps $4,000. Without rolling it over, a 45-year-old in a 22% federal bracket with 5% state tax would end up with roughly $12,600 once the 10% additional tax and income taxes come out. Go direct and the whole $20,000 keeps working, with nothing taxed and no 10% charge right now.
Call to walk through your rollover type with a retirement specialist before you sign anything.
How do IRA Financial's costs compare to other crypto IRAs?
Here's how IRA Financial compares with other crypto IRAs on a $50,000 balance, with no trades after the first buy:
| Crypto IRA | Cost to buy in | Annual cost from year two |
|---|---|---|
| IRA Financial | $500 | $100 |
| BitcoinIRA | $1,000 | $480 |
| Swan | $500 | $240 |
| Coin IRA | $625 | $0 |
| iTrustCapital | $500 | $0 |
| Fidelity Crypto IRA | $500 | $0 |
Even at $250,000, IRA Financial holds its fee at $100 a year, while Swan comes in at $600 and BitcoinIRA at $2,400 for the same balance. No custodian or 401(k) provider pays this site, so referral deals don't influence these numbers.
