Coin IRA review: fees, minimum and coins

With Coin IRA you pay no annual account fee, 1.25% on each crypto purchase, and a $5,000 minimum to get started. Funding works two ways: roll over a 401(k) or 403(b), or put in fresh money. If you are thinking about it for retirement, the numbers below show the cost at your balance.

What do Coin IRA fees look like in dollars?

Coin IRA charges nothing to open or hold your account. You pay only when you trade: 1.25% when you buy and 1.0% when you sell.

Here is what that looks like at a few balances: move $10,000 and the buy-in is $125; move $50,000 and it is $625; move $250,000 and it is $3,125. If you hold rather than trade, the yearly cost stays $0 at each balance.

Those yearly amounts assume you keep your coins and never trade. When you sell down the road, the 1.0% fee applies to the amount you sell.

Account minimum, coins, and IRA types

Opening or funding an account takes $5,000. The platform lists 17 coins, among them Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and XRP.

The IRA types on offer are:

  • Traditional
  • Roth
  • SEP
  • SIMPLE
  • Inherited

How safe is my crypto with Coin IRA?

A custodian holds your coins. That is the firm that legally keeps the IRA's assets and handles its records. Coin IRA relies on Ledger Enterprise cold storage under qualified custody, and states that assets are never lent, borrowed, or staked. Every account gets cold storage at no added cost.

Moving a 401(k) into Coin IRA

You can bring in 401(k) and 403(b) rollovers. How the money travels matters, since one path can trigger tax right away.

  • Direct rollover: the old plan sends the money straight into the new IRA. Nothing is withheld, so your full balance stays invested.
  • Indirect rollover: the plan sends the money to you, and you get 60 days to deposit the whole amount into an IRA. The catch is that the plan holds back 20% for federal tax. On a $20,000 cash-out, the plan keeps $4,000, and you have to find that $4,000 yourself to roll over the full amount.

Funds sitting in an old employer's plan can roll over whenever you like. A 401(k) at your current job only moves through an in-service rollover, meaning 401(k) money goes to an IRA while you are still employed there. Not every plan permits it.

Cashing out is the pricier choice. Take $20,000 at age 45, in the 22% bracket and 5% state tax, and the 10% additional tax plus income taxes leave you $12,600. Roll that same $20,000 over directly and every dollar stays invested.

Which route fits depends on where the money sits and what your plan allows, and that is worth getting right before anything moves. Call and a retirement specialist will go over it with you.

How do Coin IRA's costs compare with other crypto IRAs?

Against similar accounts, Coin IRA's purchase fee runs slightly higher, while its yearly cost ties for the lowest. At a $50,000 balance, iTrustCapital, Fidelity Crypto IRA, IRA Financial, and Swan each cost $500 to buy in, Coin IRA costs $625, and BitcoinIRA costs $1,000. For the yearly cost, iTrustCapital, Fidelity Crypto IRA, and Coin IRA are $0, IRA Financial is $100, Swan is $240, and BitcoinIRA is $480.

Across several years, paying $0 a year can outweigh a small difference in the purchase fee. This site receives no payment from any custodian or 401(k) provider.
