How we compare 401(k) crypto options
We build every table and calculator here using published pages from the relevant companies and agencies, checking them monthly and sorting by cost or name.
Where the numbers come from
- Crypto IRA custodians: the fee schedule, help center and coin list each custodian publishes.
- 401(k) providers: the pages each provider publishes, plus ADP's own guide for savers using its brokerage window.
- Solo 401(k) providers: the pricing page of each provider.
- Rules and tax: the IRS, the Federal Register, the Labor Department and the White House.
Links to sources appear on the relevant page for every number.
Working out crypto IRA costs
- To buy in: your typed balance multiplied by what the custodian charges on a crypto purchase, using its trade-size tiers if it has them.
- Each year after: the yearly account or custody fee the custodian charges at that balance, counting any monthly minimum and assuming no trades.
- Default order: the lowest yearly cost comes first. Sorting by name or the buy-in cost is an option.
The table includes a custodian only if its pages publish all fees needed by the table.
Method behind the 401(k) checker
This checker matches your situation to existing routes: crypto option inside the plan, brokerage window, rollover, solo 401(k) or IRA transfer. Every route that applies gets listed, cheapest yearly cost first. None gets ranked as the right choice for your situation.
Re-check schedule
Provider pages, coin lists and fees get re-read every month. Agencies publishing something new trigger re-reads of rule pages. We check the proposed Labor Department rule monthly until it becomes final.
