BitcoinIRA review: fees, coins and custody

BitcoinIRA lets you keep over 100 coins inside a retirement account and it takes 401(k) rollovers, though its fees run higher than most crypto IRAs we track. This review covers what it charges, who actually holds the coins, and how a direct rollover moves 401(k) money over with nothing withheld.

BitcoinIRA review in short

BitcoinIRA lists 100+ coins, with Bitcoin, Solana, and XRP among them. It works with Traditional, Roth, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs and accepts 401(k) rollovers. Thinking of moving a 401(k)? Call 844.960.3682 before you ask your plan for a check, because a check to you means 20% held back and 60 days to put the full amount into an IRA. A retirement specialist will walk you through a direct rollover, where the money goes straight to the new IRA and nothing is held back.

The big downside is what it costs. Every purchase carries a 2% charge, every sale carries another 2%, and the monthly account fee rises as your balance grows.

BitcoinIRA fees in dollars

Buying costs 2.0% of the trade, and selling costs a further 2.0%. On top of that, the account fee runs 0.08% of your balance per month, with a floor of $20 a month.

Say you buy once and just hold. Selling later means another 2% off whatever your coins happen to be worth then.

Is BitcoinIRA cheaper than other crypto IRAs?

Usually, no. Here is what a $50,000 account costs to get into and to keep each year, assuming you make no more trades.

CompanyCost to buy inOngoing yearly cost
BitcoinIRA$1,000$480
Choice$745$500
Coin IRA$625$0
Fidelity Crypto IRA$500$0
iTrustCapital$500$0
IRA Financial$500$100
Swan$500$240

With $250,000 in the account, BitcoinIRA's $2,400 yearly cost ranks second highest, only a touch below Choice at $2,499. Call and a retirement specialist will go through these figures at your own balance, so you see the yearly cost before you pick a custodian.

Who holds your coins?

An IRA always has a custodian, meaning the firm that legally keeps the account's assets and handles its paperwork. With BitcoinIRA, the assets sit with a state-chartered trust company. Your coins are kept at BitGo, in wallets that require multiple signatures before any funds can be moved.

Rolling a 401(k) into BitcoinIRA

How you move the money matters. A direct rollover into a traditional IRA keeps every dollar invested with no tax now. Moving pre-tax savings into a Roth IRA means paying tax this year. When pre-tax 401(k) money goes straight from your old plan into a traditional IRA, nothing is withheld and no tax is due on the rollover. Roll $20,000 directly into a traditional IRA and the whole $20,000 stays invested.

With an indirect rollover, the plan sends the money to you and keeps 20% back for federal tax. On a $20,000 cash-out, that means $4,000. From there you get 60 days to deposit the entire sum into an IRA, which includes replacing the 20% that was withheld.

Miss that window before you turn 59½, and you could owe tax plus a 10% additional tax. A 45-year-old facing a 22% federal rate plus 5% state tax could end up keeping roughly $12,600 out of that $20,000.

Converting pre-tax 401(k) savings to a Roth IRA creates a tax bill for the current year. On $30,000 at a 22% rate, that works out to about $6,600 in federal tax.

Funds sitting in a former employer's plan can be rolled over whenever you like. Funds in your current employer's plan call for an in-service rollover, which is a transfer made while you are still on the job. Your plan has to permit it, and not all do. Before you request a check, call a retirement specialist to talk through a direct rollover, so the money goes straight to the new IRA.

Opening the account

BitcoinIRA requires $1,000 to open or fund an account. Money can come in through a transfer, a rollover, or a deposit from your bank. The base IRA contribution limit for 2026 is $7,500.
